Badminton doubles rotation planner
Create rotating doubles schedules from player names, courts and rounds. Check games, rest rounds and repeated pairings, then save CSV or JSON and print the schedule.
Results
The planner balances game counts first and suggests combinations with fewer repeated partners and opponents. It does not guarantee an optimal schedule, skill balance or minimum consecutive rest. Gender, skill and fixed partnerships are not considered.
Games and rest by player
| Player | Games | Rest | Distinct partners | Repeat partners | Distinct opponents | Repeat opponents |
|---|
A personal repeat counts each encounter after the first with the same person. Each game has two opponents. Summary repeat totals count each two-person relationship once, so they are half the sum of individual repeats.
How to use
- Enter one player per line, including everyone attending every round.
- Choose courts and rounds. One court requires four players.
- Create the rotation and review games, rest and repeated pairings for every player.
- Try a new seed for alternatives. Save JSON settings or print the final schedule.
Example
Ten players, two courts and six rounds produce 12 matches. Eight people play and two rest each round. Each player has 4–5 games and 1–2 rest rounds. Seed 20261031 reproduces the sample.
Method and limitations
Each doubles match contains four distinct players. For each round, the planner chooses those with fewer games first, then those with the longer current rest streak. Seeded ordering breaks ties. It compares 161 bounded combination candidates for the chosen players, first minimizing the increase in squared partner-encounter counts, then squared opponent-encounter counts. It does not search for a globally optimal schedule. Limits: 4–32 players, 1–8 courts (at most players÷4), and 1–30 rounds. Scores, winners, court rotation, service order, mixed-doubles constraints, skill, late arrivals and early departures are excluded. Data stays in browser memory without automatic saving. JSON contains names, settings, algorithm version and seed and regenerates the schedule using the same version.
Frequently asked questions
Will everyone play the same number of games?
Equal counts are possible when total player slots divide evenly by the player count. Otherwise this planner keeps the game-count difference at one or less. Everyone must be available every round.
Can partners and opponents never repeat?
Repetition may be unavoidable for the chosen player and round counts. The bounded search reduces repeated encounters but guarantees neither zero repetition nor the smallest possible total. Check the statistics or try another seed.
Does JSON also save match results?
This tool does not record results. JSON saves names, settings and seed to regenerate the rotation with the same algorithm version. Check who can access it before sharing names.
Can I enforce mixed doubles or skill levels?
This version creates general rotating doubles without gender, skill or fixed-partner inputs. Review the suggested pairings for your session.
