WIN-J COOKING & BAKING
Saltwater concentration calculator
Calculate saltwater by total solution mass percentage or salt-to-water percentage. Prepare a new batch or calculate water or salt to add to an existing batch.
Calculation result
This tool does not determine concentrations or safety for food storage, curing or fermentation. It calculates only pure water and salt masses on the selected basis.
How to use
- Choose to prepare new saltwater or adjust an existing batch.
- Choose salt percentage by total solution mass or by water mass. For a new batch, enter water weight; for an existing batch, enter total saltwater weight and current percentage.
- Enter the target percentage and review salt or water to add. Use the same selected basis for current and target percentages.
Calculation example
For a 5% solution by total mass using 1,000 g of water, salt = 1,000 × 0.05 ÷ (1 − 0.05) ≈ 52.63 g. At 5% of water mass instead, use 50 g of salt. To dilute 1,000 g of 10% solution to 5% by total mass, add 1,000 g of water.
Method and limits
Solution mass percentage p = salt ÷ (water + salt) × 100; salt-to-water percentage r = salt ÷ water × 100. For a new batch, salt is respectively water × p ÷ (100 − p) or water × r ÷ 100. For an existing batch, salt and water masses are derived from its current percentage. Add salt only to raise the concentration, or water only to lower it. A 0% target requires zero existing salt: finite water addition cannot make a salted solution exactly 0%. Assumes pure water and pure salt only; food absorption, existing food salt, other solutes and solubility limits are excluded. Mass inputs must be greater than zero and no more than 1,000,000,000. Solution percentages range from 0% up to but not including 100%; water-based percentages support 0–1,000%. High percentages are mathematical results and do not guarantee dissolution.
Frequently asked questions
Does 5% saltwater need salt equal to 5% of the water?
It depends on the basis. A 5% total-mass solution needs about 52.63 g of salt per 1,000 g of water. Salt at 5% of water mass is 50 g.
Which weight do I enter when adjusting a batch?
Enter the total existing saltwater weight, including water and salt. The current percentage separates those masses; the calculation adds only salt or only water to reach the target.
Does the result establish safe storage or fermentation?
Food safety cannot be determined from this calculation. Food type, temperature, time and acidity are not calculated, and no storage or fermentation concentration is recommended.
