Projector throw distance and screen size calculator

Use throw ratio and aspect ratio to compare the distance needed for a target screen and the image range at an available distance. Compare wall area and save CSV or SVG.

Free · no installationYour inputs are processed in this browser.

Input settings

Use the minimum and maximum throw ratios specified for the same image aspect ratio. Enter equal values for a fixed lens. Enter both wall dimensions or leave both blank.

Throw ratio = throw distance ÷ image width. Distance is generally measured from the lens to the image; confirm the manufacturer reference point, especially for ultra-short-throw models. It is not the distance from the back of the projector or the full room length.

How to use

  1. Find the minimum and maximum throw ratios for your intended aspect ratio and confirm the distance reference point in the product manual.
  2. Enter the target image diagonal and available throw distance. Optionally enter both wall dimensions.
  3. Compare the target distance range and the image range at the entered distance.
  4. Review the front-view size diagram and save the results as CSV or SVG.

Example

A 100-inch 16:9 image is about221.38cm wide. With a throw ratio of1.2–1.5, the required distance is about265.66–332.07cm. At300cm, the same ratio range produces about90.34–112.93inches.

Method and limitations

Distance=image width×throw ratio. Width=diagonal inches×2.54×aspect width÷√(aspect width²+aspect height²). At a fixed distance, the maximum throw ratio gives the smallest image and the minimum ratio gives the largest. Supported inputs are throw ratio0.05–10, diagonal1–1,000inches, distance/wall dimensions1–10,000cm and aspect dimensions1–100. Enter manufacturer ratios for the same aspect ratio and lens configuration. This is an optical-zoom geometry estimate; it does not apply model-specific distance-table corrections, keystone, digital zoom, lens shift, offset, brightness, resolution, focus, mounting load or installation clearances. Manufacturer distance references are particularly important for ultra-short-throw models.

Frequently asked questions

Do I multiply the throw ratio by the diagonal?

No. Multiply it by image width. The diagonal is first converted to width and height using the aspect ratio.

How do I enter a fixed lens or a single throw ratio?

Enter the same minimum and maximum ratio. Both the distance and screen-size ranges collapse to a single value.

Can I finalize the installation from this result?

This is a geometric size comparison. Confirm the product distance table, lens reference, height, offset, ventilation and clearances in the manufacturer manual.
